The F4U Corsair entered service with the US, New Zealand, and Australian air forces shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan. Even so, it was still primarily used by the United States Marine Corps during the Pacific War. This was mainly due to problems with certifying it for carrier landings.
The Corsair proved to be one of the most succesful aircraft of the war and was highly respected by their foes, over any other aircraft. The corsair also out lasted many other legendary prop driven planes in service. It remained being used by the US Navy long into the age of the Jet and even into the Vietnam War.
It would later be made famous by the television show Baa Baa Blacksheep. A highly fictionalized account of the Black Sheep Squadron of the US Marines.
