I'll mention it here; B&N is having a 1/2 price sale on Criterion dvd's - generally too pricy for me. I loaded up on Samurai classics yesterday and a five pack of movies called, "Nikkatsu Noir"; five films from the famed 'B' studio in Japan from the late 50's and early 60's. I watched the first one last night; "A Colt Is My Passport" starring Joe Shishido (Branded To Kill) and was delighted to find a tightly written gangster noir in crisp black and white of a professional hit man who takes from a Yakuza gang, a contract to rub out a rival gang boss. When he does the job, and the two gangs decide to merge, guess whose head is on the chopping block. Good performances and a great one by the lead, superlative on location photography of an end of the world seaport with grimy docks, derelict barges and massive automobile graveyards - and filled with the kind of people you would expect to live there. Another delight of the movie is the hero (?) acts intelligently through out the entire film - and that is such a rarity!
